Biography: Dr. Rao is a full Professor of Radiology and a member of the Molecular Imaging Program at Stanford (MIPS), BioX program, Cancer Biology, Stanford ChEM-H. Dr. Rao did his Ph.D. with Prof. George M. Whitesides at Harvard University, and his postdoc with Prof. Roger Y. Tsien at UCSD from 1999 to 2001 . He became an Assistant Professor at UCLA before joining Stanford, and then promoted to a full professor at Stanford. He has received many honors including Human Frontier  Science Program Young Investigator and Career Award at the Scientific Interface. The main research in his lab focuses on probe chemistry and nanotechnology for molecular imaging and diagnostics. He has published many papers, including Science, Nat. Chem., Nat. Biotechnol., Nat. Nanotech., Nat. Commun., PNAS, JACS, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.  


Abstract: Molecular imaging is becoming an indispensible tool for elucidating biology in animal models of human health and disease, and for diagnosis and guiding therapy in the clinic. A key enabler of molecular imaging is probe development and innovation, an area of intensive interest for chemists. This talk will present our recent efforts in developing light- and target-responsive probes and their applications in imaging biology and medicine. I will first describe our development of small fluorogenic molecules for rapid labeling and imaging of bacterial pathogens mycobacterium tuberculosis, and then discuss our approach in creating a unique class of small molecule probes that can undergo in situ self-assembly into nanoparticles in responsive to biological targets for cancer imaging and therapy. Finally I will share our latest work in developing photo switchable nanoparticles for background-free photoacoustic imaging of labeled cells.
